The Basics of GMAT Test Preparation
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized test that is used to screen applicants for admission into MBA programs at universities around the country. It is a form of aptitude test that is based on skills accumulated from early childhood to the present. This test does not assess a person’s skill in business or management. Instead, writing, reasoning, and mathematic skills are assessed. Many people have questions about what to focus their attention on during GMAT test preparation.
The sections of the test break down into two essays that the person will have 30 minutes each to write. One will be an assessment of an issue of current impact and the other will be an assessment of an argument. For this one, the person may take either the pro or the con position and use appropriate points to prove his/her position.
The next section will be the quantitative section that tests the individual’s math skills and ability to recognize problems with insufficient data available for a solution. The final section will be the verbal section. Here, the person must answer multiple choice questions that cover reading comprehension, grammar, or critical reasoning skills.
The internet offers a wide array of GMAT test preparation courses. Some are offered for free, while most charge a fee. Many of these include sample tests that allow the person to see what types of questions will be asked on the actual exam.
The best courses make use of the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format. This means that the sample questions become easier or more difficult based upon the responses thus far on the exam. This format is used on the actual GMAT and can be confusing to those who do not know what to expect. One advantage of this type of testing is that two people may sit side by side and have no chance of being able to cheat off one another because each is being tested to his/her own level of advancement.
Areas of concern during GMAT test preparation are the analytical writing skills, math, reasoning, and grammar. Students should focus their preparation time on developing their analytical skills and methods of proving their points in a clear and concise manner. The verbal section should not prove too challenging for most students, but the sentence correction questions can throw a person if he/she is not careful. One should watch out for items like modifiers, subject verb agreement, punctuation, and look alike or sound alike words. Also, one should beware trick questions in this section.
